Facts & Short history of Berkeley

The first people who set foot on the site were Berkeley lies today were the Chochen/Huichin band of the Ohlone people.


Remains of their existence were found in San Francisco Bay, at Strawberry Creek and more artifacts were found in 1950 in the downtown area.


The first Europeans came in 1776, with the De Anza Expedition.


Alameda County was created on the 25th of March, 1853, by division of Contra Costa County, including a small portion of Santa Clara County.


The area that later became known as Berkeley was initially part of Contra Costa County.


In 1970 the population of Berkeley has declined, but it is today estimated at over 100 000 inhabitants.


Berkeley has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters. The best time to visit the city is in September that comes with temperatures as high as 71°F. The coldest time of the year is in January and the wettest month is considered to be January.
